Backing Up Database

Postby Tiburon » Sun Jul 26, 2009 2:15 am

I have been having some computer issues lately so I am going to re-format my hard drive and so I am backing up important files to an external hard drive. I wanted to make sure I backed up my PT database so I thought I'd ask here what files and/or folders I need to back up. My db is postgresql. Do I just need to backup the entire PokerTracker folder in my Program Files or something else too? Thanks.

You just need to use the Utilities > PostgreSQL Database Functions window to make a backup of your db, like you did when I asked you to send me the .backup file a few days ago. You don't then need to backup any other PostgreSQL files. After you reformat, you will have to reinstall PostgreSQL and restore the database.

To do the restore (after the reformat):

1. Open the Utilities/PostgreSQL Database Functions window.
2. In the Restore section, use the Browse button to select the backup file you created when you backup up the db.
3. Click the Restore button. Let the DOS window that opens when the restore starts close by itself. That will mean the restore is done. It could take 20 minutes or so.
4. Go to the File/Maintain Database Names window, click the Add button and then select "Select existing PostgreSQL database" option from the last field in the new row. Then on the window that opens, select the database that was created by step 3. Check the "Dflt" box next to this new entry. Then save the changes and close the window and RESTART PT and you'll be ready to go.

These are separate functions, they don't have anything to do with a backup. Click the help link at the top right corner of the window and read the directions.
